Fear is a basic and healthy reaction of the human being that is key to survival by making us aware of the danger and therefore helps our protection.
If what is feared is repeatedly avoided, it becomes terror and phobia, triggering the alarm of extreme protection and defense, which is manifested by a higher than expected physical reaction to the real danger of the feared object. In this way the phobia is limiting and paralyzing when it is in contact with that object or animal, but outside that space the person can develop with total normality.
In fact, people who suffer from a phobia, this usually accompanies them throughout their lives until they decide to put themselves in psychological treatment and eradicate it. They maintain an adequate level of satisfaction of their lives, they do not usually suffer from any other associated psychological disorder, they are usually very good at organizing themselves and asking for help from their family to avoid their phobia, being able to go unnoticed by the external observer.
The case of the Katsaridaphobia in our country is seasonal, it is limited to summer, it is then that the one who suffers it, as if it were a soldier on duty before the imminent stalking of the enemy, increases his level of alertness and They deploy a whole series of precautions and avoidance: preventive eradication with professional fumigation, spray and put traps throughout the house, during the night separate the bed, away from the curtains, that the bedspreads do not touch the floor, systematic avoidance of garages, going out to terraces when it gets dark, since any movement on the floor or in clothes can be one of them.
Faced with the phobia of cockroaches, psychological treatment is very effective even though we have been suffering it for years. The key is to persuade the person that in order to defeat his enemy, it is essential to know him.
The first task will be to study cockroaches daily for a short period of time: their origin, morphology, classification according to regions or countries, utility, reproduction etc. as if it were a thesis where he will present his findings in session. In this stage of therapy, it is usually when one experiences the sensation of being the predator and not the victim, an important emotional experience that instills security.
Finally, it will be crucial in therapy to teach those who have just overcome their phobia of cockroaches as they could fall back into it, that is, repeated behaviors will eventually cause a relapse.
Throughout the treatment we observed a gradual decrease in the level of alertness of the person, decreases the subjective feeling of danger to the cockroach, translating into a sense of tranquility, so that the person gets the cockroach does not cause negative emotions.
This type of therapy manages to eliminate a phobia in two months because these tasks block the avoidance, the request for help and the systematic precautions that are the basis of the persistence of the phobia. In fact most people who have a phobia of cockroaches do not remember a traumatic event in childhood and although they remember it, are their repeated behaviors or attempted solutions that lead to the phobia is aggravated.
